Anthropogenic Water Use

Improved resolution for monitoring irrigation water

Anthropogenic activities are profoundly altering the water cycle, already under increasing pressure from climate change. Among these activities, irrigation is the most impactful yet also the least monitored.

The overarching objective of the Climate Change Initiative – Anthropogenic Water Use (CCI-AWU) precursor project is to monitor irrigation dynamics from satellite observations by deriving long-term time series of irrigation water use. This project serves as a proof of concept for the development of a dedicated Anthropogenic Water Use Essential Climate Variable (ECV) product within the European Space Agency’s Climate Change Initiative (ESA CCI).

isardSAT has joined the project on its second phase (CCI-AWU IMPRES), where it will provide satellite-based retrievals at medium to high spatial resolution, a crucial step toward enabling their operational use in climate applications and impact studies.

isardSAT will generate soil moisture products downscaled to 1 km resolution based on ESA CCI and SMOS/SMAP soil moisture datasets over the study sites . isardSAT will also contribute to the validation and impact assessment of the AWU products and their use in use cases oriented to climate research
